Nonprofit Org. U.S. Postage PAID Platteville, WI Permit No. 7 T.J. Samson Community Hospital 1301 N. Race St. Glasgow, KY 42141 AUGUST 2019 T he best cancer care isn’t just about diagnosing and treating the disease. “It’s all about pro- viding complete care to patients, their families and to the commu- nity,” says Yashpal Modi, MD, an oncologist and hematologist at T.J. Samson Hospital. Here are four ways T.J. Samson works to make comprehensive and top-quality cancer services avail- able close to home: A wide range of treat- ment options. T.J. Samson provides treat- ment for many common cancers. “The most common cancers are breast, lung and colon cancer,” Dr. Modi says. “And we do all treatments, including surgery, for these three can- cers right here at T.J. Samson.” Other cancer treatments available at T.J. Sam- son include: Chemotherapy. The T.J. Health Pavilion is home to a state-of-the-art chemo infusion center. It offers standard chemotherapy, immunotherapy and medicines that target specific cancer genes. For certain cancer types, immunotherapy and target therapy can deliver very effective treatment with substantially fewer side ef- fects, Dr. Modi says. But if a patient does experience difficult side effects from any can- cer treatment, help is only a phone call away. “We provide 24/7 call coverage to cancer patients,” Dr. Modi says. “So if they have side effects from their treatment, they can call us anytime. We are available to help.” Radiation therapy. This treat- ment is provided by a team led by Craig Tyree, MD. “His office is just across from the hospital,” Dr. Modi says. Early detection and prevention. For many types of cancer, early detection offers a better chance for successful treatment. That’s why T.J. Samson provides screening tests and ex- ams aimed at finding lung, breast, colon or ovar- ian cancers before they even cause symptoms. T.J. Samson also has a community outreach program that encourages tobacco cessation, says Dr. Modi. Smoking is the leading cause of lung cancer, and it plays a major role in many other kinds of cancer. Cancer support. A cancer diagnosis can be understandably stressful. It helps to have someone there to guide you through the treat- ment process. “As soon as you are diagnosed, you get a phone call from a nurse navigator who explains what the next steps will be,” Dr. Modi says. Other support services are available too. These include nutritional services, physical therapy and palliative care (symptom relief ). A survivorship program, which includes follow-up tests and care, helps people stay healthy even after their cancer treatment ends. University affiliation. T.J. Samson col- laborates with the University of Kentucky Markey Cancer Center. The affiliation benefits those with more complicated cancers, Dr. Modi says. “Our patients have very easy access to their cancer center and to their clinical trials,” he says. Cancer clinical trials are studies that test new drugs or other treatments. QUALITY PLUS COMPASSION Even with all of these quality services, what makes the cancer care at T.J. Samson so spe- cial is that it is delivered with a high level of compassion. “We have a great team, and they are all com- mitted to the best patient care,” Dr. Modi says.
